From The Director’s Desk – December 2018

I hope that your holiday season has been filled with light and joy. Yesterday, I returned home from our Father-Son Family Camp – what an adventure! It was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on families throughout the year, in addition to our summer activities. As we gave Fathers and Sons an opportunity to reflect on 2018, I, too, have been thinking a lot about all the ways to celebrate this past year and to look forward to the next.

Here are just some of the things inspiring my reflection and igniting my interest in the coming year:

1) Throughout 2018, we celebrated our 30th anniversary year. Whether it was with a massive event with more than 400 people at camp on June 17th, a variety of smaller events throughout our home communities, or even the special celebrations held with campers during the summer, we should all be proud of what we have accomplished in our first thirty years together.

2) Our new static tower was a huge success in summer 2018 and continues to be an anchor for challenge and growth across the camp spectrum. Countless individuals recount the ways in which the ropes course and other activity areas at camp nurture their individual and communal growth.

3) Our focus on leadership continues to grow as we seek out innovative ways to challenge our teens and staff members to think critically of how they can play a role as leaders in our community at camp and at home. Our Capital Camps Institute for Leadership and Learning (CCI) will welcome its fifth cohort in summer 2019.

4) Meanwhile, just before Thanksgiving, we accepted our largest class yet of aspiring leaders into our Counselor-in-Training program for the coming summer. These energetic and thoughtful young people are ready for the next steps of their camp journeys, and they are thrilled to think about how they might give back to our community as future staff members.

Finally, in the coming weeks, we will unveil the culmination of several months of effort aimed at creating a dialogue around who we are at Capital Camps and who we want to be. Together with stakeholders throughout the camp community, we are excited to begin sharing the outcomes from our creative process and to launch the next thirty years with limitless possibilities.

For now, on behalf of the entire team here at camp, we wish you a safe and meaningful holiday season and winter break. We look forward to seeing our campers and staff members at our upcoming camper reunions on January 5-6.

Until then, Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Adam Broms
Camp Director
